IEEE Benelux Chapter on Information Theory

Frans Willems, full professor emeritus in the Signal Processing Systems group at TU Eindhoven is the recipient of the 2026 Claude E. Shannon Award for consistent and profound contributions to the field of information theory. He will deliver his Shannon Lecture at ISIT 2026 in Guangzhou, China. 

As announced by the Information Theory Society:

The IEEE Information Theory Society (ITSoc) is pleased to announce that the recipient of the 2025 Chapter of the Year Award is the Benelux Section Chapter. The Chapter of the Year Award annually recognizes a chapter that provides their membership with outstanding programs and activities. The prize includes $1,000 to support local chapter activities.

The Benelux Section Chapter is being recognized for its activities and its promotion of information theory research, which kept the chapter active throughout the entire year. These efforts include organizing and hosting the 2024 European School on Information Theory through a local team at Eindhoven University of Technology. The chapter arranged two distinguished lectures, and co-organized several regional events jointly with the WIC (Werkgemeenschap voor Informatie- en Communicatietheorie), including meetings on current topics in information theory.
